Carl Walther GmBH was founded in 1886 as a company. In the late 19th century, production was primarily hunting, but that would change by 1908. The gun had been in production since before World War I, but Walther's design was weak and often unreliable. Some guns, like the Model 4, worked well, but were far from great designs. Changed with PP.

The Walther Police Pistol (PP) was introduced in 1929 and would become Walther's best-selling design. The PP is a semi-automatic/single-action (DA/SA) hammer-operated pistol that operates via a fixed barrel recoil design. All the work is metal except rubber. Simple design means ease of production and ease of use for the end user.

The pistol is more ergonomic than previous Walther designs. With a magazine release on the side of the frame and a durable safety, grip and ease of use are improved. The PP is not a huge weapon, but it gives a lot of room to get two hands.
PP is accepted by many police agencies in Europe, and has become an official in many countries. The PP was considered a good cop until the Munich Olympics massacre of 1972. After the massacre, a new 9mm design was needed, resulting in the Walther P5, SIG P6, and H&K P7. That's another story. Production of PP continued from 1929 to 1986, and many police agencies continued to use them until the 1990s.
As PP becomes more popular, some changes may occur. Who are the famous people?
While PP is common, PPK is more common. The Police Pistol Case (PPK) is a shortened version of the PP, with a smaller slide and a shorter grip. As a weapon for police and detectives, it has grown in popularity over the years. An MI6 agent also likes it. Unfortunately, the .32 ACP version of the PPK is no longer in production, so they cost a pretty penny. You can get them in .22 LR or .380 ACP, but I prefer the .32.

Another popular variant is PPK/s. This product is a combination of PP and PPK for US import. PPK/s use a full size PP frame, short for PPK display. Walther PPs like the Glock 45. Most PPK/s are made by Smith & Wesson and Walther still makes them domestically in the US.
Although not a variant, the Russian Premier Makarov is the Soviet version of the PP. The receiving and processing programs are similar, except for a few differences. Definitely better than Tokarev!
The interesting thing about PP is the place of production. WW2 and pre-war production equipment were made in Germany, at Walter's factory. However, all post-WW2 PPs were made by French Manurchin. There are Manurchin and Walter Romka guns, but they were made by Manurchin. Dan's PP is a Manurhin roll, but mine is Walter.
I bought PP from Simpson LTD in October 2021. Simpson LTD is a good seller to deal with and I got a good deal on PP. The gun comes in excellent condition and has a factory plastic case from the 1970s. This is a 1972 model pistol that was previously issued by the Bavarian police on a stamp. However, there is something strange about the weapon.

The grip. The gun comes with a fake grip. Not "Walter" on the flag, but "Waltheb". Even more surprising, it is not made of plastic like other PP gloves, but aluminum or similar stainless steel. I looked at Simpson LTD for answers and even hit the Walter Owners forum. No problem, can't find where the next hand came from. I ordered two original plastic ones after I got fed up of holding them one by one.
My PP is a bit longer and has an I-Dot sight. Like the Beretta M9, the rear sight has a vertical white line and the front sight has a white dot. A good cut from the 1970s. Along with the sights, PP has an anti-glare check on the screen. This results in better shooting behavior and faster viewing.
Other than the better looking and sounding scene, my PP is pretty good. How is it shot?
I had never shot PP before my last purchase. Since then, I've sent about 850 rounds through the mine.

PP is easily my favorite gun for recreational use. The twist is smooth and the gun feels great. The .32 ACP is already a very soft bullet, but the ergo and weight of the PP makes it even better. If you have big hands, you can bite off a little slip, but it's too small.
Driving is another thing. The DA's pull is very long, about 12 pounds on the gun. The SA has a slight pull, in the 4.75-5 pound range. Both are smooth, but the DA's heavy weight takes some getting used to. Managing this is challenging but fun.
A nice little look makes the shot look like a breeze. They are still more powerful than modern irons or sights, but they are good for a gun of this size. The screen on the screen helps the eyes pop, but the paint on the back and front also helps.
The trust was very good. I had a dozen or so average first strikes, but it didn't seem to have anything to do with the gun. One misfire occurred around the 600 round mark, but I didn't clean the gun that caused it. PP guns come from a time when they needed to be cleaned regularly, and the strike action caused a mess.

I like shooting the gun. At that time it was very popular to shoot 850 guns 8 rounds, but I didn't feel compelled to do that.
I love PP. It's an interesting, classy and cool gun. It shoots one of my favorite rounds, right, and mostly reliable. However, there may be a deal breaker: the price.
PP is not a cheap material, nor is it very expensive. I paid $700 for mine, but it is in very good condition and comes with the factory box. I see less chewers going and more higher end / WW2 production equipment going. If you want a PPK in .32, brace yourself for the effect. These went out of production a long time ago, and the cheapest ones I've seen are around $2,000. This is a lot of money for a set of toys.
And buying a PP or PPK magazine is not cheap (.32). I paid about $40 for a Mec-Gar magazine that would add speed.

All that being said, you can still find new PPKs and PPK/s in .22 LR and .380 that will help fill the gap. The .380 is nice to shoot, but the .22s should be interesting. I still recommend trying the PP in .32 for tracking. My only gripe with the PP is that it makes me feel like I like it better than other .32 ACP pistols.
