Three-time Super Bowl champion and current NFL Network analyst Willie McGinest was arrested Monday in connection with an attack at a West Hollywood, Calif., nightclub, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.

McGinest, 51, was taken into custody for assault with a deadly weapon shortly after he arrived at the West Hollywood station to report the incident on Dec. 9, according to a sheriff's statement.

Authorities said witnesses identified McGinest, a former New England Patriots linebacker, as involved in the attack at the Santa Monica Boulevard club.
Details of the incident were not immediately available. TMZ obtained video that shows McGinest punching the man in the face and hitting him with a bottle.
McGinest was jailed 30 minutes after his arrest at 7 a.m. local time, records show. He was released a little more than two hours later on $30,000 bail.
The fourth overall pick in the 1994 NFL Draft, McGinest earned two Pro Bowl selections. Since retiring after the 2008 season, he has worked as an analyst for ESPN, Fox Sports and the NFL Network.

Adrian Peterson, an NFL free agent, was arrested Sunday at Los Angeles International Airport after a domestic violence incident with his wife, Ashley Peterson, authorities said.
A spokesperson for the Petersons told NBC News on Monday that the incident was a "private misunderstanding" and that the couple had been arguing over Ashley Peterson's wedding ring.
Los Angeles airport police said the department received a call around 8:30 a.m. local time (11:30 a.m. ET) about a possible domestic violence incident on a flight departing from LAX to Houston, according to an NFL news release.

The plane left the gate but was forced to return due to a suspected verbal and physical altercation between a male suspect and a female suspect, airport police said in a news release.
After an investigation, Peterson was taken into custody, authorities said. The victim and other passengers remained on the flight to Texas. NBC News confirmed that Peterson was arrested Sunday night.
A representative for the couple said Ashley Peterson had a scratch on her finger and the two had a "verbal altercation" during the flight.
"This is a private misunderstanding between a husband and his wife and we expect it to be resolved soon," said a representative for the Petersons.

Peterson was assigned to the Pacific Division of the Los Angeles Police Department. He was released later Sunday afternoon after posting $50,000 bail, according to jail records.
A spokesperson for the couple said Ashley Peterson will not press charges and does not expect anything more from the incident.
Peterson, 36, is a longtime athlete in the league who last played in 2021 with the Seattle Seahawks.
In 2014, Peterson pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault in an incident involving his son. The charge led to him being suspended, fined and ordered to serve community service, and ultimately suspended for the rest of the 2014 season, according to the NFL.

Ray McDonald was playing for the San Francisco 49ers in August 2014 when he was arrested for allegedly assaulting his pregnant girlfriend.
Four months later, in December 2014, McDonald became a suspect in a sexual assault case. The 49ers cut him from the team, but the NFL didn't act.
The Chicago Bears signed McDonald three months later in March 2015. Rape charges were dismissed in 2017 after the victim refused to testify.

In May 2015, McDonald was in trouble again. He was arrested after allegedly assaulting his ex-girlfriend in California while she was holding their young son. A grand jury declined to indict him on domestic violence charges.
The Bears cut him from the team. The NFL did not act and McDonald has not played since.
Cases like McDonald's highlight the NFL's inconsistent punishment system for players accused of sexual and domestic violence.
The league took steps to improve its domestic and sexual violence education — and tightened its punishment policy — after Baltimore Ravens' Ray Rice knocked his then-girlfriend unconscious in an elevator in 2014. Atlantic City. Now, the league's bottom line is a six-game suspension for a first violent offense — or threat of violence — and a lifetime ban for a second. A player does not have to be charged or convicted of a crime to receive this penalty.

It is very difficult to keep track of the number of NFL players charged with violent crimes and whether they faced punishment from their teams or the league. The NFL does not maintain a public database of its disciplinary actions.
However, using a USA Today database supported by the Houston Chronicle report, the newspaper found 80 cases where players were accused, summoned, arrested or accused of violence since January 2015, after the NFL revised its policy.
Fewer than 40 percent of the 69 players surveyed by the Chronicle received NFL suspensions, and punishments handed down were often inconsistent. At least 10 players from 2015 to the present have been re-indicted, arrested or charged with a violent crime, often before the league has issued any sanctions.

About 31 percent of those 80 cases resulted in punishment through the criminal justice system. In cases that weren't, the cases are still ongoing, the players have been acquitted, or charges have been dropped. Some allegations were not reported to the police, or the alleged victims retracted their stories or refused to come forward.
Prosecuting domestic and sexual violence crimes is often difficult, advocates say, because victims decline or refuse to pursue a case for reasons such as financial and housing support from the abuser, shame and guilt associated with the event and, sometimes, treatment. Cases can also be difficult to prosecute because there are often only two witnesses to a crime – the victim and the accused. Physical evidence, such as the results of a sexual assault investigation, can be difficult to obtain.
When allegations surface, the NFL typically begins an investigation into the allegations -- a process that takes months. It is up to each team to suspend or cut a player during an investigation. In less than 40 percent of the 80 cases, players were removed from the team after allegations. A player can also be placed on paid leave — meaning he can't practice or attend games — also known as the commissioner's exception list.
Since the NFL does not comprehensively release this information, it is difficult to say what will happen to players whose criminal cases have not been covered by the media.

Houston Texans star Deshaun Watson is one of the latest athletes to be embroiled in a scandal.
In March, Ashley Solis filed a lawsuit against the 25-year-old quarterback, claiming he sexually assaulted and harassed her during massage therapy last year. More than 20 women followed suit with similar allegations, although one woman has since withdrawn her case, citing privacy and security concerns.
Houston police are investigating at least one criminal complaint against the football player. Watson, whose future with the Texans is uncertain, has denied the allegations and has not been criminally charged. The NFL has launched an investigation into the case.
For years, critics and experts have argued that the NFL's punishment policy is not strong enough, with some saying a zero-tolerance policy should be implemented to curb the rate of violent crime among athletes.

She said the NFL specifically did not adopt a zero-tolerance policy — on the advice of several experts — because it could prevent some victims from coming forward. For example, if the victim of domestic violence is a wife or girlfriend who is financially dependent on the player, they may fear that speaking up would mean immediately losing their spouse, friend, or job, which would affect their financial stability.
"These are complex cases where we're talking about intimate partner violence," she said. “We want people to sign up, we don't want them to feel like if they sign up and something happens, it's going to destroy their whole financial livelihood. "
