Beretta Apx Disassembly - The venerable Beretta M9 pistol — a version of the still popular Model 92 FS — has served the U.S. military for nearly three decades. It has evolved through the diverse climates and rigors of the global war on terror, evolved when needed, and brought 9mm cartridges to our front lines instead of the .45 ACP, much to the dismay of many.
When the Army began looking for a replacement for its aging fleet of M9s, Beretta offered several clever solutions, but ultimately submitted a version for consideration as part of a new modular pistol system. The company did not win the lucrative contract, but citizens were encouraged by the 2017 decision because Beretta now commercially offers semi-automatic versions of the pistol. Each has the same advanced design and military performance requirements. There are certainly differences, but they are not noticeable at a distance or in self-defense.

The standard version of the Beretta APX is available in 9mm or .40 S&W. Both have a 4.25" barrel and an overall length of 7.55". Magazine capacity is 15 rounds and unloaded weight is 28.21 and 28.92 ounces.

Both models are equipped with a light and strong synthetic frame reinforced with fiberglass technopolymer. The grip frame can be adjusted to fit different hand sizes—thanks to the stock chassis frame and internal chassis—and the pistol comes with three different-sized backs that can be easily swapped out for a more custom fit. Of course, the Pictatinny bar on the dust cover is ideal for mounting on lights or lasers.
The APX magazine release can be left-handed, the bolt catch is extremely wide, and the pistol has an innovative firing pin deactivation button that allows it to be disassembled without pulling the trigger. There is no manual safety, but the rifle has a trigger safety and a striker-locking automatic safety that requires sufficient trigger travel before firing. It is a perfect combination, designed to withstand shocks so common as to be discharged in battle. Beretta does not publish an MSRP for the APX line, although some major retailer websites are currently listing prices for just under $400.
For a more military finish, the company also offers an FDE strategy with all the same benefits. It is also available in the same chamber, but the magazine capacity is 10, 15 or 17 depending on the model.
It is also ready for APX RDO optics. Don't forget about the company's concealed carry, which includes Centurion, Compact, Carry and other models. The Carry Gray Wolf is only available in 9mm, but with a 3-inch barrel, 5.63-inch overall length, and 19.8-ounce empty weight, it's a serious contender for permit holders looking to lighten their loads.

I picked up a Beretta APX Compact at a local gun shop. When I first picked it up and held the gun, I immediately noticed how aggressive the grip control was, which is not a bad thing for me. I think it's a good alternative to the model, and with three adjustable straps, the gun fits a variety of hand types. The grip is a cross between a Glock 19 and a Glock 26. The APX compact is big enough to fit all my fingers on the grip, which is a plus for handling. The compact version holds 13 rounds in a flush magazine and is quite a compact rifle.
APX is quite thick for its width, but it helps with slider loading and manipulation. My APX has a clean trigger with a clean wall that looks great for a stock factory trigger. I couldn't find a model with night sights in stock, so I bought a basic T-dot system that does the job just fine. Combat-style sights are easy to carry and work well for quick transitions.
One thing that really surprised me was the magnesium release pressure. When you press the release button the magazine flies out of the gun. I've been surprised more than once by how powerfully the magazine fires out of the gun, but it's useful when you get used to it. The overall ergonomics of the gun were excellent and reminded me of a full size APX. The gun felt solid in the hand, and the point gun felt secure in the hand.

The APX is very easy to dismantle and has a breakaway lever like most polymer pistols. I cleaned the rifle before the range, but I didn't throw a ton of lube on the slide because I wanted to see how it would perform. After I spent about an hour firing the trigger and getting used to the gun after cleaning it, I was happy with how much the trigger pull felt after a little practice.
As far as weapon lights go, the APX Compact has a Picatinny rail for accessories, but it's a small niche with not enough room to attach a Surefire X300 Ultra or Streamlight HL. There is plenty of room for a small laser or Enforce APLc, so don't forget. The square trigger guard is somewhat similar to the M9A2's trigger guard, but has no effect on shooting or handling. I've shot this before when it was cold and the trigger guard was too big to shoot with gloves. Wearing gloves can sometimes be a problem when shooting in the colder months, but shooting the APX Compact with gloves was a real joy.
When it comes to shooting the APX Compact, the rifle is very controllable and quite comfortable for the size of the rifle. It has a very smooth recoil which makes it easy to pick up and shoot. This controllability is mostly due to its larger size than a gun of the same power but smaller size. The SIG Sauer P365, for example, has a fast, direct recoil that can feel sharp if you use high-pressure self-defense cartridges. The P365 may not be much to certain enthusiasts, but it is very small. The APX is a great pistol. But the goal is much softer when it comes to returns.
On my first trip to the range I put about 1800-1850 rounds through the APX compact and overall I thought it was a good gun to shoot. I didn't have a weird reaction when I fell in love with a gun. It was a really good experience, and because it shoots so quietly, I really enjoyed the gun at the end of the day. The aggressive factory grip on the front didn't isolate my hand, but kept the gun where I wanted it, and I liked how the overall grip worked while shooting.

I plan to shoot the rifle more and I'll let you know my thoughts in a few months. Right now I like the APX Compact and I think it has a unique niche in the market between the Glock 19 and Glock 26. I put it in the same category as H&K's VP9SK or P30SK where they are compact guns but not micro. . I'm happy with how positive the grip is and how it feels almost like an extension of the full size APX. I plan to continue testing the APX Compact and report back on how it performs.
