Judging by the sales numbers, I'm not the only one who feels that way, and SCCY (pronounced "sky") has taken notice. They released the CPX 1 and it's almost identical CPX 2 to try and cater to the public's desire to buy a cheap, nice looking shotgun.

For better or worse, the SCCY CPX line has exploded in popularity, so I was excited to get my hands on one and see how it fared in our tests.
Right out of the gate we have to talk about the difference between the CPX-1 and CPX-2, that difference being the presence of a manual thumb safety. The CPX-1 has one, the CPX-2 does not. Given the nature of a double pistol, I chose the CPX-2 and recommend that you do, but if you want a thumb safety, the option is there. Both are only available in 9mm.
The SCCY CPX-2 is available in a variety of factory color combinations. You have the option of a clear or black slide and nine different frame colors or black, white, red, brown, orange, pink, purple, yellow, gray and white.
I don't know of another manufacturer that has more factory options on a pistol, so that's a plus.

With this $200 gun being mostly polymer, you'd expect it to be cheap, but it's actually very solid. It doesn't have the Nerf gun feel you get with many similarly priced guns.
This is due in no small part to the experience of SCCY owner Joe Roebuck. Joe is an engineer and toolmaker by trade and runs a tight ship in a workshop. SCCY has developed all their own tooling and machining processes for the CPX rifles, so they can produce such a quality rifle at such a low price.
Seriously, the CPX-2 has a total of 36 parts in it, the connections are simple and the slide and barrel are all removed from the stock. The grip is made of injected Zytel which is very strong, yet light and economical enough to work with.
The sight is a three-dot affair that is easy to adjust and that's fine. Nothing to write home about, but perfectly adequate for a cheap defense gun. In defensive areas, firing points will be more important than sight correction anyway.

For your money, you get 10 single round magazines with interchangeable base plates, two inflated bases and two extended bases that give your pinkie a grip, which is great if you have big hands, or just want that extra. Wait.
In terms of reliability, there are two things to keep in mind. First, the magazines that come with this gun do not like metal ammunition. Given that this is a defensive gun, you still shouldn't use a cheap gun with metal bullets, but it's worth pointing out. Something about the texture on the inside of the paper like binding with metal caps.
Second, I had two light hits that I didn't get out of the SCCY but went well in the GLOCK. Now that was a cheap souvenir with a metal case that you shouldn't be using anyway, and solid starters are common with stuff like that, so I wouldn't worry about that either.
For all practical purposes, with good ammo, the gun fires every time. I'm confident enough to carry it with confidence if I'm on a tight budget.

Now you are probably thinking “All this for $250? What's holding you back?" And of course, that's because we live in an imperfect world.
I burned this thing a little while I was about to put it in my hands, oh my god. I don't want to say the trigger is poorly designed or poorly made because it isn't. The gun only uses a double action internal hammer design so the shooter must move the hammer back until he moves the sight and down the firing pin to fire the round.
There is a lot of work to be done and that work shows in the long trigger pull on this thing. I used caulking guns with triggers that didn't last long. It's also very light at under 9 pounds of pull weight (The three I tested were 8.4-8.6 pounds). It's almost there and the NYPD GLOCK goes off.
Despite all this, the trigger is relatively smooth with no real packaging. Just a mile long pullback and an equally long reset. You can also get an aftermarket shorting kit and hammer kit for about $70, but how many of us are going to spend that kind of money fixing a gun like that?

There are quite a few, I would think, and I can only test this as it comes from the factory, and from the factory the trigger is very difficult to operate and prevents accuracy with enthusiasm.
In short, this is not a competition gun. But isn't that really the point? This is not a target pistol, and at just over a third of the cost of a GLOCK, we should temper our expectations a bit.
One last argument: the gun is limited to +P ammo but only for "limited use". Now, +P ammo is very defensive ammo, so that's a problem, but armos are expensive anyway so you probably won't be shooting it much.
A box or two every few months won't hurt, and I've put maybe 200 rounds of +P ammo through this thing so far and the gun is still running. And it's important to note that nothing will explode, you'll just wear out the friction points quickly.

So with that in mind, how well does the gun fulfill its role as a small, defensive gun? Well, that's the real question, isn't it?
For reference, my best group with six different types of ammunition was the size of a dinner monster at 25 yards. On 7 meters I could keep everything in the A zone, but just right.
With my Glock 48 I can get a 3" group in 25 and I can do the same with my LC9s. And I can stack rounds that hit 7 yards. I'm not Jerry Miculek, but I'm not drunk either, so when I say that it's not me, it's a gun, I mean it.
Granted, I'm new to shooting SCCY and had only shot about 50 rounds before trying to shoot for a museum, but honestly I don't think there was a lot of practice that strengthened my groups much. The trigger in this case is not very useful when you are trying to shoot accurately.

But let's think about this. This is a gun designed to stop someone trying to hurt you, no accuracy contests.
How accurate does it have to be, really? It's still a 4 inch group up there at ten yards and twenty yards I was still on an 8 inch spread. This is an upper chest shot, as far as almost any decent defensive shot I can find outside of police/military incidents.
In most defensive situations, you have the attacker less than seven meters away, and you will aim to have the body of an adult. This gun knows that easily.
With practice, I got the 10 yard failure drill (two quick shots to the heart/lung area and one to the brain) up to half a second longer than I could with the LC9S.' m which I am very familiar with.

I think with $40 ammo and a little practice anyone can be good enough with this gun to defend themselves with it, but for self defense.
